It's been said that Fazio's courses "look hard but play easy." Known for building courses that appeal to all levels of player-skills, he is also acclaimed for consulting with nature to bring out the best attributes of a site.
Among them are Shadow Creek, Black Diamond, World Woods, Wild Dunes, Wade Hampton, and Nos. 4, 6, 8 at Pinehurst. With over 120 courses to his credit, each course is unique. Fazio takes pride in the way his designs respond to the challenges and gifts each location presents. That is especially true at Camp Creek, where Fazio has shaped a 7,151-yard, par-72 course with a significant wetland system that he has used to accent the golf experience.
Fazio has received many honors during his thirty-some-year career (forty if you count the years apprenticing to Uncle George), but among those honors he values most are the ones he gained from his peers and the individuals who maintain golf courses. For the three years Golf Digest polled golf course architects to name the "Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect," Fazio's peers chose him. Also highly regarded by the American Association of Golf Course Superintendents, he is one of only three architects to receive their highly cherished "Old Tom Morris Award."
Behind the name, Tom Fazio, is a group of talented, creative and visionary designers. As with any team, the members do not simply work for Fazio, but rather work with him. It is this team, with its diverse background and knowledge, yet united love for the game of golf, which enables Fazio Golf Course Designers to create courses noted throughout the industry for their excellence.
"Golf courses should reflect the natural beauty of the setting." And, on this premise, Tom Fazio and his staff of talented associates have set the following design priorities:
Tom and Sue Fazio and their six children reside in Hendersonville, North Carolina. They are active in their community and support many local charities, art and theater associations, as well as educational institutions. However, the Boys & Girls Club of Hendersonville and East Flat Rock are most important to the Fazio's, which they founded in 1993 and 1998, respectively. Currently, the Boys & Girls Club of Hendersonville has over 500 members and continues to grow.
